First form your own opinion instead of feeding yourself with other people's. One has to learn to draw one's own conclusion, even if it is half baked. There is little to no benefit and breaking it apart and trying to understand each piece separately. Literature is primarily suppose to be an experience. There is much more to fiction than analysis and understanding. The climb is what makes the peak special. Everest and ask you to go down to the base. How about it I just put you in the plane and have you dropped at the peak of Mt. In general, slow down, and don't be afraid to re-read if you suddenly realize you're not sure what's happening! If I'm not in the mood to write that sort of thing down or do my little doodles, I've also done my own little casting in my head, where I cast actors for all the characters so I can clearly visualize someone in connection to the name. It really helped me keep track of the story once I could keep the characters straight. I would do a little doodle of what each character looked like to me with their name, and I made a little family tree as well to keep track of who was who's kid, etc. I found the thing that really helped me there was to create my own little character sheets. I read 100 Years of Solitude for a class, and it was an amazing book! It was hard for me to follow at first, though, since there are a lot of characters with similar names. This may also sound silly, but don't be afraid to take notes! Reading out loud has helped me in the past.
